Preventing Water Damage

September 29, 2015 -

When you think about water damaging your home, you imagine a hurricane, torrential rain, or other natural disasters. The truth is, that even water damage can also be caused when a household appliance fails and can be just as destructive as a catastrophe.

Studies have shown that water damage accounts for BILLIONS of dollars in losses to homeowners, renters, and commercial property owners each year! Also, 25% of all property insurance claims are also water damage related.

Fortunately, there are always preventive measures you can take to hopefully prevent water damage from happening in your home. Washing machines, dishwashers, broken old rusty pipes are all common causes of water damage. Always check your appliances regularly, because 9 times out of 10, there is no warning sign until the damage is done.

5 Things To Know!

  • Know where the main water supply is in case you need to do an emergency shut off.
  • If you are going on vacation, especially in the winter, it may be wise to shut your water off. Make sure to maintain a moderate temperature in the winter to prevent freezing and busting pipes.
  • At least once a year, check/maintain all water using appliances. Water heaters, washing machines, dishwashers, and refrigerators.
  • Don't forget about sinks, tubs, showers and toilets!
  • Always check water pipes in/under the house. Catch pipe damage early before it gets worse and more costly.
