Stay Safe in the Heat

June 21, 2012 -

Here are some tips to Stay Safe on these Extremely Hot Days:

  • Stay indoors as much as possible.

  • Limit your exposure to the sun.

  • Avoid extreme temperature changes.
  • If you don't have air conditioning, visit somewhere that does.  A restaurant, a public library, or a shopping mall are all good locations to stay out of the heat.
  • Save strenuous physical activities for the early morning or evening hours, avoiding the hottest parts of the day.
  • If working outdoors take frequent breaks.
  • Stay hydrated and avoid alcohol.

  • Eat well balanced, small meals, frequently.

  • Dress in loose-fitting, lightweight, and light-colored clothes that cover as much skin as possible; wear a wide-brimmed hat to protect your face and neck from the sun.

  • Make certain your pets have a cool place to rest along with plenty of water.  Check on them frequently.

  • Never leave children or pets in closed vehicles.

  • Keep careful watch on seniors, young children and those who are sick or overweight.  They are the most likely to suffer from heat cramps, exhaustion or stroke.

Take these precautions and listen to your body.  Be careful to avoid heat stroke or dehydration.
